Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 16
Matchday 16 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and impressive performances. Here is the Bundesliga roundup of matchday 16.
Dortmund 2-3 Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen handed Borussia Dortmund their first home league loss of the season, netting three goals in the first 18 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory over the weakened Dortmund team. This win brings Leverkusen within 4 points of league leaders Bayern Munich. This victory makes Leverkusen the first Bundesliga team this season to win six consecutive matches.
St Pauli 0-1 Frankfurt
Frankfurt snapped their five-match winless streak by beating St. Pauli 1-0 at the Millerntor-Stadion, also breaking a three-game losing streak on the road. Meanwhile, St. Pauli remains in a precarious position, with only one point between them and FC Heidenheim, who are in the relegation play-off zone.
Mainz 2-0 Bochum
Jonathan Burkardt netted both goals to help Mainz secure a straightforward victory over Bochum, allowing them to move into the Bundesliga’s top 5 and extending their unbeaten streak against Bochum to six league encounters. Meanwhile, Bochum continues to sit at the bottom of the table, having lost 12 of their first 16 games, and will require significant improvement in the upcoming months to steer clear of relegation.
Hoffenheim 0-1 Wolfsburg
Ralph Hasenhüttl’s VfL Wolfsburg team, which had gone unbeaten in eight matches before losing their last two, reignited their hopes of finishing in the top six of the Bundesliga by defeating struggling TSG Hoffenheim 1-0, courtesy of a first-half header from Mohamed Amoura. Wolfsburg have now won five of the last seven encounters between the two teams. On the other hand, Ilzer is acutely aware of the significant challenge ahead, as his team is now just one point above the relegation zone.
Heidenheim 2-0 Union Berlin
Frans Krätzig scored on his debut for Heidenheim, leading the team to a 2-0 victory against struggling Union Berlin, marking their first win in 11 Bundesliga matches. Union Berlin has not won in their last nine Bundesliga games (with 2 draws and 7 losses), and under Baumgart’s management, they appear to be at risk of being heavily involved in the relegation battle this season.
Freiburg 3-2 Holstein Kiel
Freiburg managed to withstand a late attack to secure a 3-2 win over Holstein Kiel, who have yet to win an away match in the Bundesliga this season (with 6 losses and 2 draws). Despite the late pressure, Freiburg clinched an important three points, moving up to 6th place in the Bundesliga, while Kiel remains in 17th place, six points adrift of safety after suffering their fifth straight away loss.
Monchengladbach 0-1 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich achieved a rare victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach at Borussia-Park, winning 1-0 in the Bundesliga. This marks only their second win in the last seven matches at this venue. The win allows Bayern to maintain a four-point lead over second-place Bayer Leverkusen, while Gladbach drops to 11th place.
RB Leipzig 4-2 Werder Bremen
Xavi Simons made a strong comeback from injury by scoring two goals, leading his team to a 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen and boosting their confidence. This win helped his team maintain an unbeaten record in home matches against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga (7 wins, 1 draw). The visitors drop to 9th place, while the hosts have climbed into the top four due to their fifth home league victory of the season.
Augsburg 0-1 Stuttgart
Deniz Undav was the key player for VfB Stuttgart, helping them achieve their fifth win in the last six matches in all competitions with a hard-fought 1-0 win against FC Augsburg. Augsburg is having a tough start to 2025, currently just three points above the relegation zone, and they will face fellow relegation contenders Union Berlin next.
