Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 20
Matchday 20 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and impressive performances. Here is the Bundesliga roundup of matchday 20.
Werder Bremen 1-0 Mainz
Even though Werder Bremen ended the match with only nine players, they managed to secure a 1-0 victory against Mainz at the Weserstadion, marking their fourth straight win over the Zerofivers for the first time since 2010. It was a disappointing night for Bo Henriksen’s team, who are in 6th place despite losing three out of their last four games. Meanwhile, Bremen’s hopes for European competition have been revived with their first win of 2025.
Stuttgart 1-2 Monchengladbach
Stuttgart has suffered three straight losses across all competitions after falling 2-1 at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. The visitors secured their second consecutive league win, moving up to seventh place, just outside the European qualification spots, and only two points behind Stuttgart, who are in 5th.
St Pauli 1-1 Augsburg
St. Pauli missed the chance to secure consecutive home victories in the top division for the first time since February 2011, as Mert Kömür scored a late equalizer for Augsburg, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches (3 wins, 1 draw). The home team was unable to mount a comeback in the final moments and had to accept a draw, which left them seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Heidenheim 1-2 Dortmund
Mike Tullberg’s Borussia Dortmund ended a four-match winless streak in the Bundesliga with a tense 2-1 win against Heidenheim, who have managed to secure only one victory in their last 10 home games. This victory provides a much-needed three points for the team, and keeps their slim chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League spots alive.
Bochum 0-1 Freiburg
Following three straight losses, Julian Schuster’s Freiburg secured their seventh consecutive head-to-head win, thanks to Kiliann Sildillia’s first Bundesliga goal, which led to a 1-0 victory and kept Bochum at the bottom of the standings. This win has propelled Freiburg back into the top half of the table, bringing them closer to the European qualification spots.
Bayern Munich 4-3 Holsten Kiel
Bayern Munich capitalized on starting their match before their title competitors, maintaining their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 6 points by defeating Holstein Kiel 4-3 at the Allianz Arena. This victory marked their eighth consecutive home league win, with each match featuring at least three goals. Meanwhile, the visiting team remains in the relegation zone, six points away from safety.
Union Berlin 0-0 RB Leipzig
Steffen Baumgart’s Union Berlin team failed to capitalize on the opportunity to extend their lead over the Bundesliga relegation zone to nine points, settling for a goalless draw at home against RB Leipzig. This result marked their 13th winless game in 14 matches, leaving die Eisernen feeling frustrated as they believe they missed out on valuable points at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. On the other hand, Leipzig will be the more satisfied team after a match they could have easily lost, as they move back into the top four.
Frankfurt 1-1 Wolfsburg
Frankfurt maintained their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, now at five matches, by coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg continued their impressive record, having lost only one of their last nine visits to Deutsche Bank Park. This result means Frankfurt has not won in their last three matches across all competitions, while Wolfsburg missed the opportunity to move into the top six.
Leverkusen 3-1 Hoffenheim
Bayer Leverkusen closed the gap to the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 victory against an injury-plagued Hoffenheim, marking their ninth consecutive home win and allowing only six goals during that stretch. Their upcoming match against Bayern in two weeks will be crucial, while Hoffenheim’s next home game against Union Berlin carries significant stakes as well, but for different reasons at the bottom of the table.
