Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 28
Matchday 28 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and impressive performances. Here’s the Bundesliga roundup from this round.
Augsburg 1-3 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich rallied from a goal deficit to win 3-1 against their Bavarian rivals Augsburg at the WWK Arena in the opening match of round 28 in the Bundesliga. This victory maintained the 6-point lead over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
RB Leipzig 3-1 Hoffenheim
RB Leipzig overcame an early deficit to win 3-1 against Hoffenheim at Red Bull Arena, earning three points in their 300th Bundesliga match and maintaining their hopes for the UEFA Champions League. After losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the previous round, Leipzig managed to recover, and although they have only won two of their last six Bundesliga games (with two draws and two losses), they remain in control of their path to the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League.
Mainz 1-1 Holstein Kiel
Nelson Weiper’s equalizing goal in the 75th minute allowed Mainz to stay in the top four of the Bundesliga after a 1-1 draw with struggling Holstein Kiel. This disappointing result means Mainz is now just one point ahead of fifth-placed RB Leipzig in the ongoing fight for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Heidenheim 0-1 Leverkusen
Emiliano Buendía scored his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen with a last-minute winner, helping the Bundesliga champions secure a 1-0 victory over Heidenheim. This marked Leverkusen’s fourth consecutive win in their head-to-head matchups, thanks to another signature late goal, keeping them six points behind leaders Bayern. On the other hand, Heidenheim suffered their first defeat in four games and remains 4 points away from safety.
Freiburg 1-4 Dortmund
Dortmund’s chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) are still alive following a 4-1 win against SC Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion. This result keeps Niko Kovač’s Bundesliga record with the Black and Yellows free of draws (W4, L4).
Bochum 0-4 Stuttgart
Stuttgart broke their six-match winless streak in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 victory against VfL Bochum on the road, bringing them closer to the European qualification spots. This result was particularly detrimental for Bochum, who continue to sit in the relegation zone, while Stuttgart can now focus on climbing the standings, having maintained a strong head-to-head record against Bochum.
Werder Bremen 2-0 Frankfurt
Frankfurt lost a chance to solidify their hold on third place in the Bundesliga after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion. As a result, Frankfurt has missed the chance to extend their lead to six points in the top four and will now need to keep an eye on FSV Mainz and RB Leipzig, who are trailing them by two and three points, respectively.
St Pauli 1-1 Monchengladbach
Gerardo Seoane was just five minutes away from making history as the first Mönchengladbach manager to secure five straight Bundesliga away victories, but St Pauli scored late to end the match in a 1-1 draw, allowing them to move four points above the relegation zone. On the other hand, Gladbach missed the opportunity to break into the top five, settling for their first draw since early February.
Union Berlin 1-0 Wolfsburg
Union Berlin extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a close 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg, moving 11 points clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone and handing Wolfsburg their third straight loss. Wolfsburg now finds themselves six points away from the top six, making it unlikely for them to qualify for European competition unless they can return to their form from before the winter break.
