Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 4

Matchday 4 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and impressive performances. Here’s a recap of the weekend’s events.

Augsburg 2-3 Mainz

Mainz achieved their first Bundesliga victory of the season in surprising fashion, overcoming Augsburg 3-2 in Bavaria even after playing much of the game with one fewer player. With this win, Mainz extended their unbeaten streak in away matches to six. Meanwhile, Thorup will be frustrated that his team was unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority when they had the chance.

Werder Bremen 0-5 Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany maintained his perfect winning record as Bayern Munich’s manager, leading the team to a commanding 5-0 win against Werder Bremen, marking their 20th goal this week. However, what will likely bring the former defender the most satisfaction is Bayern’s clean sheet, their first away from home in the Bundesliga since November 2023, as the Bavarians continue their impressive start to the season.

Union Berlin 2-1 Hoffenheim

Union Berlin remains undefeated in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season after securing a 2-1 win against TSG Hoffenheim at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. This victory extends Union’s unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches, as Die Eisernen work to move past the negative memories of last season’s relegation struggle. On the other hand, Matarazzo’s team faces their third consecutive loss and is looking for a change in their luck as they head to Denmark on Wednesday to compete against Midtjylland in the opening match of the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.

Heidenheim 0-3 Freiburg

Freiburg continued their strong start to the 2024/25 Bundesliga season by easily defeating Heidenheim 3-0 at the Voith-Arena, handing Frank Schmidt’s team their second consecutive loss of the season. Grifo scored two quick goals that severely impacted Heidenheim, who, despite making five substitutions, could not prevent their first defeat in three encounters and their third consecutive loss at home in the top flight. Julian Schuster’s Freiburg celebrated their first away victory in four league matches and recorded their first clean sheet of the season.

Bochum 2-2 Holstein Kiel

Bochum missed the chance to secure their first win of the season, conceding a late equalizer to finish 2-2 against Holstein Kiel at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. This result extends Bochum’s poor home performance, as they have only managed one win in their last eight home league matches (with three draws and four losses). On the other hand, Holstein Kiel is still at the bottom of the Bundesliga table despite earning their first point in the league.

Frankfurt 2-0 Monchengladbach

Eintracht Frankfurt climbed to fourth place in the Bundesliga after securing a 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, who have managed to win only one of their last ten league matches. Frankfurt is celebrating their third consecutive Bundesliga victory, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2021. In contrast, Mönchengladbach is struggling at the lower end of the standings, suffering their third loss of the season, during which they have allowed multiple goals in several matches.

Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 Wolfsburg

Victor Boniface netted a last-minute goal in the 93rd minute, leading Bayer Leverkusen to a thrilling 7-goal victory over Wolfsburg at the BayArena. This win allowed them to avoid the embarrassment of being the first Bundesliga champion to lose their first two home games.

Stuttgart 5-1 Dortmund

Stuttgart secured their fourth straight victory in head-to-head matches against Borussia Dortmund, defeating Die Schwarzgelben 5-1 and extending their unbeaten streak at home to 14 Bundesliga games. Serhou Guirassy scored for his new team against his former club, marking his fourth consecutive goal in this matchup. However, this was merely a consolation goal, as Stuttgart quickly responded with a fourth goal from El Bilal Touré, who scored his first Bundesliga goal after an impressive play by Millot. The rout continued as Undav added a fifth goal in stoppage time, delivering Dortmund their first loss of the season in a decisive manner.

St Pauli 0-0 RB Leipzig

St. Pauli and RB Leipzig played to a 0-0 stalemate at Millerntor-Stadion. Although the newly-promoted team secured their first point, they are still without a win in their first top-tier season since 2010/11 after squandering numerous opportunities. Meanwhile, Leipzig is just one match away from setting a new club record for a 15-match unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, but this result is disappointing, as they now trail leaders Bayern Munich by four points.
