Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 8
Matchday 8 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and impressive performances. Here is a Bundesliga roundup of the weekend’s events.
Mainz 1-1 Monchengladbach
Despite a largely strong performance, Mainz was unable to secure their first home win of the Bundesliga season, settling for a 1-1 draw against Mönchengladbach. This result leaves Gladbach with only three away victories over the past two seasons. Mainz extended their unbeaten streak against Gladbach to eight games, which is their longest current run without a loss against any of the other 17 Bundesliga teams. Although Gladbach made a late push, it was ultimately a disappointing outing for them, and they will need to achieve more away wins soon if Gerardo Seoane hopes to stay at Borussia-Park beyond the new year.
Stuttgart 2-1 Holstein Kiel
El Bilal Touré played a key role in both goals for VfB Stuttgart as they secured a 2-1 victory over Holstein Kiel. This win means Stuttgart has lost only one of their last 25 home Bundesliga games under coach Sebastian Hoeneß. The result marked Stuttgart’s second consecutive win across all competitions after a four-match winless streak, while Kiel has now faced six losses in the Bundesliga this season.
St Pauli 0-0 Wolsburg
St. Pauli and VfL Wolfsburg showcased a strong defensive performance at the Millerntor-Stadion, resulting in a goalless draw that extended the Kiezkicker’s unbeaten streak to five matches against Die Wölfe in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg has managed to secure only one victory in their last 15 encounters with St. Pauli across both leagues, putting Ralph Hasenhüttl in a tough position as he seeks to improve the team’s performance after earning just eight points in the first eight league matches of the season.
RB Leipzig 3-1 Freiburg
RB Leipzig rallied from a deficit to extend their remarkable unbeaten streak against SC Freiburg to 12 matches, securing a 3-1 victory at the Red Bull Arena that lifted them to 2nd place on the Bundesliga standings. Leipzig continues to be undefeated in the league following this impressive win, which allowed them to be level on points with Bayern Munich in the rankings. Meanwhile, Freiburg has yet to achieve a win at the Red Bull Arena, even after initially taking the lead in the match.
Augsburg 2-1 Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund’s quest for their first away Bundesliga win of the season continues after they lost their lead to Augsburg, who claimed a 2-1 victory at the WWK Arena. With no wins on the road yet, Dortmund currently sits in seventh place, but they are expected to fall further behind the European spots above them.
Werder Bremen 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen recorded their third draw in five Bundesliga matches after Romano Schmid scored a last-minute equalizer, resulting in a 2-2 tie with Werder Bremen. Although Leverkusen remains unbeaten in nine matches, they have drawn four of their last six. While the late goal was a positive outcome, Ole Werner’s team has only won two of their last 11 home games.
Bochum 0-5 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich climbed back to the top of the Bundesliga standings with a commanding 5-0 victory over last-placed Bochum, achieving only their second clean sheet in 16 away league matches. Kompany will be satisfied with another solid showing following a tough UEFA Champions League loss to Barcelona earlier in the week, as they have now netted 13 goals in three league games immediately following European matches this season.
Union Berlin 1-1 Frankfurt
Union Berlin managed to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, moving into the Bundesliga’s top four despite extending their winless streak against Frankfurt to four matches. Eintracht’s defense was finally breached in stoppage time when Tim Skarke, a substitute, found the ball at his feet and shot past a stranded Kevin Trapp. Unfortunately for Union, a VAR review indicated an offside violation in the lead-up to the goal. Although the offside was marginal, Union’s goal was disallowed, resulting in the teams sharing the points and leaving the visitors winless in their last three league games.
Heidenheim 0-0 Hoffenheim
Although Pellegrino Matarazzo’s TSG Hoffenheim is now unbeaten in their last three matches, they are still just three points above the relegation zone in the Bundesliga after a 0-0 draw against Heidenheim at the Voith-Arena. Both teams ended up sharing the points, with Hoffenheim’s 15-game scoring streak coming to an end, but they achieved their first clean sheet of the season. On the other hand, this draw is Heidenheim’s first in 14 Bundesliga games, allowing them to move up to 10th place, two points ahead of Hoffenheim, who are in 15th.
