La Liga Roundup, Matchday 15

Matchday 15 of the 2024/25 La Liga season has concluded, featuring exciting matches, impressive player displays, and surprising outcomes. Here is the La Liga roundup of the weekend’s events.

Mallorca 2-1 Valencia

Abdon Prats came off the bench to net the decisive goal for Mallorca in a close 2-1 victory against Valencia, elevating the home team to 6th place in the La Liga standings and ending a two-match winless streak at home. The hosts secured three points, keeping their early-season hopes for European competition alive during a successful period that has seen them win three out of their last six matches. In contrast, Valencia is struggling, having won only once in the same six-game span and currently finds themselves in the relegation zone, although they have a game in hand.

Barcelona 1-2 Las Palmas

Las Palmas achieved their first victory at Barcelona since 1971, with Fábio Silva netting the crucial goal that allowed Los Amarillos to move 2 points clear of the relegation zone in La Liga, concluding the match with a score of 2-1. Under the management of Diego Martínez, Las Palmas took advantage of their chances, and their impressive away record, having won five out of seven matches on the road, has lifted the Canarian team to 14th position in La Liga.

Alaves 1-1 Leganes

Leganés was unable to end their seven-match winless streak on the road, conceding a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Alavés at Mendizorroza, which extended their winless record in head-to-head encounters to six games. The home team may feel satisfied with the result given the situation, but the point does not benefit either team in their efforts to escape relegation.

Espanyol 3-1 Celta Vigo

Espanyol recovered from a tough stretch where they lost seven out of their last eight La Liga matches by securing a tense 3-1 win against Celta Vigo at RCDE Stadium. While this win doesn’t move Espanyol out of the relegation zone, it does elevate them to 18th place and, crucially, narrows the gap to the teams above them, with only goal difference preventing them from escaping the bottom three. Meanwhile, Celta drops to 12th place.

Atlético Madrid decisively defeated bottom-placed Real Valladolid with a commanding 5-0 win at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium, marking their seventh straight victory in all competitions. It was a tough night for Paulo Pezzolano’s team, who are experiencing their first winless streak of seven home league matches in the same season since April 2010.

Villarreal 2-2 Girona

Villarreal surrendered a 2-0 advantage, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Girona at the Estadio de la Ceramica. This outcome allowed the visitors to escape a seventh defeat in their last eight h2h encounters. Ladislav Krejčí’s goal marked the first draw in La Liga between these two teams out of nine meetings, dropping Villarreal to 5th place on the standings.

Real Madrid 2-0 Getafe

Real Madrid narrowed the gap to just one point from the La Liga summit by beating Getafe 2-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, achieving their 16th consecutive home win against Getafe. The Azulones experienced their third defeat in four games, staying just one spot above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Real is now only one point behind the league leaders and has a game in hand, with Barcelona being the only team to have beaten them at the Bernabéu in league matches since April 2023.

Rayo Vallecano 1-2 Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao rallied from a goal deficit to secure a 3-point victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Vallecas, extending their unbeaten streak in La Liga to six matches, thanks to an impressive two-goal performance from Oihan Sancet, who came off the bench. The Lions have not lost in the league since a close defeat to Girona in early October. With this win, Athletic moves into the top four, achieving their 11th victory in 15 head-to-head matches against Rayo.

Real Sociedad 2-0 Real Betis

Real Sociedad secured a 2-0 victory over Real Betis in LaLiga, marking their third straight win at home and ending the visitors’ winless streak at four matches. Imanol Alguacil’s squad has now gone five matches without a loss against Los Verdiblancos. On the other hand, Manuel Pellegrini’s team has not won in their last six visits to the Basque Country.

Sevilla 1-1 Osasuna

Sevilla faced a disappointing 1-1 draw against Osasuna at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, a result that keeps Los Rojillos unbeaten in their last six encounters (with 2 wins and 4 draws). This outcome leaves Sevilla in the middle of the table, but they are at least six points ahead of the relegation zone. On the other hand, Osasuna remains close to the top six, trailing sixth-placed Mallorca by just one point.
