Ligue 1 Roundup, Matchday 14
Matchday 14 of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season has just wrapped up, featuring exciting matches and impressive performances. Here is the Ligue 1 Roundup from the weekend.
Lille 3-1 Brest
Jonathan David scored two goals and provided an assist for another in a record-breaking night at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, leading Lille to a solid 3-1 victory against Brest. This win has allowed Lille to maintain an unbeaten streak at home in Ligue 1, now at five matches (3 wins, 2 draws). Meanwhile, Brest has suffered five losses in their last seven games (with 2 wins), and they urgently need to recover quickly to avoid a downturn in their season after a promising start, especially in European competitions.
Auxerre 0-0 PSG
Paris Saint-Germain recorded their second consecutive draw in Ligue 1, finishing 0-0 against Auxerre at the Stade Abbé-Deschamps. Despite the draw, PSG remains unbeaten in the league with a record of 10 wins and 4 draws. The home team will be pleased with the point, marking their 16th point from just seven home matches (5 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss). PSG had several opportunities to secure a victory, but the draw leaves them 5 points ahead at the top of the standings.
Monaco 2-0 Toulouse
Monaco secured a solid 2-0 victory against Toulouse in the early evening match of Ligue 1, preventing the visitors from achieving a third consecutive head-to-head win at Stade Louis II. This victory puts Monaco just 5 points behind league leaders PSG, while Toulouse stays in tenth place and misses the opportunity to move into the top six.
OGC Nice 2-1 Le Havre
OGC Nice secured a victory against Ligue 1’s struggling Le Havre, winning 2-1 at Allianz Riviera, which propels the Eaglets back into the top 6. Le Havre continued to fight and managed to score a goal in stoppage time, but it wasn’t sufficient, marking their ninth loss in the last 11 Ligue 1 games, dropping them to 17th place. On the other hand, Nice is 6th on the table, celebrating only their second win in the last 19 head-to-head encounters.
Angers 0-3 Lyon
Rayan Cherki excelled as Lyon triumphed over Angers with a score of 3-0, marking their fourth straight head-to-head win in Ligue 1. Lyon has now extended their unbeaten streak in the league to nine games and secured all three points, allowing them to surpass Nice in the standings and move into fifth place. On the other hand, Angers has suffered defeats in three of their last four matches and is currently only one spot above the relegation play-off zone.
RC Lens 2-0 Montpellier
Lens maintained their pursuit of European football for a third straight season by defeating last-placed Montpellier 2-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. After taking the lead, Les Sang & Or managed to hold on for a crucial three points, which puts them on equal points with Nice in 6th place. On the other hand, Montpellier remains at the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings, 5 points behind St Etienne, who are in the relegation play-off spot.
Strasbourg 0-0 Reims
Strasbourg experienced a disappointing goalless draw at Stade de la Meinau, which enabled Reims to increase their lead over Le Racing to five points. This result also means that Strasbourg’s winless run in Ligue 1 has reached five matches. The Alsace team is currently stuck in the lower half of the Ligue 1 standings with 14 points from the same number of games. Meanwhile, Reims has not won in their last three matches, with their last victory occurring against Le Havre AC last month.
Nantes 1-0 Rennes
Rennes continues to search for their first away win in Ligue 1 this season, having drawn once and lost six times, after Moses Simon scored a spectacular goal in the 89th minute to give Nantes a 1-0 win at the Stade de la Beaujoire. Rennes fought back and seemed to have equalized in the 95th minute, but VAR intervened to disallow Christopher Wooh’s goal due to a handball, leading to an angry Jorge Sampaoli receiving his team’s second red card of the night.
St Etienne 0-2 Marseille
Marseille’s 2-0 victory over the struggling St Étienne has propelled them back to second place in Ligue 1, reinforcing their position as the team with the best away record in this season’s top five European leagues (7 wins, 1 loss). They are now only five points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain and have the opportunity to narrow that gap further when they host Lille next Saturday.
