Ligue 1 Roundup, Matchday 6
Matchday 6 of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season has just ended and it featured exciting games and impressive performances. Below is a summary of the Ligue 1 action from the weekend.
Auxerre 3-0 Brest
AJ Auxerre achieved a convincing 3-0 win against Brest at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps, marking their first clean sheet in Ligue 1 after 14 matches and handing Les Pirates their third consecutive away loss. Although Auxerre had previously lost two games this season after taking the lead, they successfully maintained their advantage this time, securing only their seventh victory in the last 22 Ligue 1 home matches. For Brest, this defeat ends a brief run of two league games without a loss, as they struggle with a disappointing start to the season, with Red Bull Salzburg next on their schedule in the second round of the UEFA Champions League.
PSG 3-1 Rennes
Bradley Barcola played a key role in all of Paris Saint-Germain’s goals during their 3-1 victory against Rennes in Ligue 1, breaking Les Rouges et Noir’s two-match unbeaten streak in league encounters at the Parc des Princes. This victory marked PSG’s sixth win in seven matches across all competitions this season and handed Rennes their fourth straight away league loss, a streak they last experienced in February 2023.
RC Lens 0-0 OGC Nice
Lens and Nice both hit the post in a goalless draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, resulting in back-to-back 0-0 league draws for the Blood and Gold for the first time since August 2007. Will Still’s Lens managed to secure their fourth consecutive draw in Ligue 1, while the Blood and Gold may regret their missed chances early in the match. Nice appeared to be a far cry from the team that dominated Saint-Étienne 8-0 the previous weekend, but Les Aiglons can take solace in extending their unbeaten streak against Lens to six games.
Le Havre 0-3 Lille
After a five-match winless run in all competitions, Lille secured a convincing 3-0 win against Le Havre at Stade Océane, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick that handed the hosts their third straight defeat in Ligue 1. This victory marked Lille’s first since their win over Angers on the second matchday, and they will approach their upcoming match against reigning European champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League with renewed confidence. On the other hand, Le Havre faced their fourth loss in six league matches.
Monaco 2-1 Montpellier
Lamine Camara’s late goal secured a 2-1 victory for Monaco against a determined Montpellier, allowing them to stay competitive with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Ligue 1. However, based on this performance, Monaco may find it challenging to maintain their position alongside PSG, who could easily march towards their 11th title in 13 years.
Toulouse 1-2 Lyon
Lyon continued their unbeaten streak against Toulouse to 16 matches, securing a 2-1 win in this Ligue 1 clash after scoring their only shot on target in the dying moments of injury time at Stadium Municipal. The visitors clinched all three points in the fifth minute of the nine added minutes when Malick Fofana’s shot from inside the box slipped through goalkeeper Guillaume Restes’ legs and barely crossed the goal line before being cleared. This left the home crowd in disbelief while the traveling fans celebrated. With this win, Lyon moved up to 11th place, while the stunned Violets fell to 15th, just above the relegation zone.
Nantes 2-2 St Etienne
Ibrahim Sissoko’s quick two-goal performance in the second half helped Saint-Étienne secure a 1-1 draw against Nantes, who, despite giving up a two-goal advantage, remain unbeaten in their last six encounters in Ligue 1. Sissoko’s goals provided some much-needed relief during a challenging return to Ligue 1 for Saint-Étienne. Nantes finished the match with 10 players after Marcus Coco received a red card for a late challenge in stoppage time.
Angers 1-3 Reims
Reims’ Japanese players made a significant impact at Stade Raymond-Kopa, leading the team to a 3-1 victory over Angers in this Ligue 1 match. This marks only the second time in 60 years that Angers has started a season winless in their first four home games. Reims successfully handled a few tense moments to secure an important win, allowing them to enter October in the top four after achieving their eighth victory in ten matches against newly promoted teams in Ligue 1. Meanwhile, Angers’ struggles are expected to continue, as they have a challenging match against Marseille ahead.
Strasbourg 1-0 Marseille
Strasbourg put an end to Marseille’s unbeaten start to the season by defeating them 1-0 at Stade de la Meinau, breaking a joint record of 17 matches without a win in Ligue 1 head-to-head encounters. This victory marked Strasbourg’s first win over Marseille since 2005 and their 1000th home win across all competitions. It was also the first loss for De Zerbi’s team under his management, as they missed the opportunity to begin a Ligue 1 season with four straight away victories for the first time in history.
