Serie A Roundup, Matchday 7
The seventh round of the 2024/25 Serie A season showcased thrilling matches, surprising results, and remarkable performances from players. Here’s a summary of the weekend’s games.
Napoli 3-1 Como
Romelu Lukaku’s goal and two assists helped Napoli secure a 3-1 victory over Como, allowing them to maintain their position at the top of Serie A. This win also extended Napoli’s perfect home record across all competitions. With six victories in their last seven matches following a disappointing opening day loss to Hellas Verona, Napoli is in a strong position in Serie A. Meanwhile, Como’s solid performance did not detract from Fàbregas’ efforts to establish his unique style of play.
Verona 2-1 Venezia
Verona overcame a one-goal deficit to secure a 2-1 win at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi, achieving their seventh consecutive unbeaten match in Serie A against Venezia FC. Venezia faced their second straight 2-1 loss and have now suffered five defeats in seven matches this season. They have managed to earn only one point from their five away league games this term.
Udinese 1-0 Lecce
Jordan Zemura’s free-kick secured a narrow 1-0 win for Udinese against Leece at Bluenergy Stadium, marking the fifth consecutive Serie A match on the road in which Luca Gotti’s team has failed to score. At the same time, the Giallorossi were unable to increase their paltry tally of just three league goals this season, which is tied for the lowest in Europe’s top five leagues.
Atalanta 5-1 Genoa
Atalanta BC moved into the upper half of the Serie A standings with a commanding 5-1 win against Genoa at Gewiss Stadium, securing only their second victory in five league matches. Meanwhile, Genoa’s difficult beginning to the season persists, leaving them in the relegation zone.
Inter 3-2 Torino
Inter Milan achieved their third consecutive victory across all competitions, thanks to a hat-trick from Marcus Thuram, leading them to a 3-2 win over Torino. This marks their sixth consecutive home win against Torino in the league. Coach Simone Inzaghi may feel let down that his team had to cling to their lead against a Torino side reduced to 10 players. Despite their three-match unbeaten streak on the road coming to an end, Torino can take pride in their strong performance.
Juventus 1-1 Cagliari
Juventus failed to achieve their eighth consecutive home victory against Cagliari in Serie A, settling for a 1-1 draw and missing the chance to be only the fourth team in the history of Italy’s top division to start a season with seven straight clean sheets. While the draw benefits Cagliari more, they still have only one league win this season.
Lazio 2-1 Empoli
Empoli’s unbeaten run in Serie A came to an end when Lazio staged a comeback to win 2-1, despite Sebastiano Esposito scoring first. This victory marked Lazio’s second consecutive win in Serie A this season, allowing them to return to the top four. On the other hand, Empoli experienced a déjà vu, as they faced a similar situation 22 years ago when they also had a 10-point tally from six matches before losing to Lazio. As a result, Empoli will finish the weekend just inside the top half of the standings.
Bologna 0-0 Parma
Bologna was unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage, resulting in a 0-0 draw against a determined Parma team at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. Bologna struggled to break through and has now drawn all four of their home games in Serie A this season.
Monza 1-1 AS Roma
AS Roma had difficulty overcoming Monza and ended up with a 1-1 draw at the Brianteo Stadium. Although they missed the chance to move up to sixth place, Roma remains unbeaten in their last five Serie A matches (with 2 wins and 3 draws). The draw allows Monza to move off the bottom of the table on goal difference, but they are still in search of their first league victory of the season. They will aim to achieve that when they face Hellas Verona after the international break.
Fiorentina 2-1 AC Milan
David De Gea saved two penalties in a thrilling Serie A match at Stadio Artemio Franchi, where Fiorentina triumphed over AC Milan with a score of 2-1. This loss halted the Rossoneri’s streak of three consecutive league victories, while Fiorentina climbed to 11th place.
