Bundesliga Roundup, Matchday 1
The opening matchday of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season featured exciting games and outstanding performances. Here’s the Bundesliga roundup from this round.
Bayern Munich 6-0 RB Leipzig
Harry Kane netted a hat-trick as Bayern Munich comfortably defeated RB Leipzig 6-0, continuing their 14-year unbeaten streak on the Bundesliga’s opening weekend and handing Ole Werner a loss in his first game as head coach of Die Roten Bullen. Vincent Kompany’s determined Bayern were satisfied with six goals, preserving their perfect start to the season after winning the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup last weekend. Starting your tenure with the toughest match of the season is far from ideal, and it will be difficult for Werner to boost his team’s morale following such a heavy loss.

Union Berlin 2-1 Stuttgart
Union Berlin kicked off their Bundesliga season with an impressive 2-1 win against VfB Stuttgart at the Stadion An der Försterei. This result means that Stuttgart, known as Die Roten, have now failed to win any of their opening away matches in the last five league seasons (drawing one and losing four). Union held on to claim the victory, giving them a perfect start to their Bundesliga campaign. On the other hand, Stuttgart endured a frustrating defeat despite being the stronger team throughout the match, marking a disappointing beginning to their season.
Heidenheim 1-3 Wolfsburg
Second-half substitutes Mattias Svanberg and Mohamed Amoura came off the bench to help VfL Wolfsburg secure just their fourth victory in their last 18 Bundesliga games (7 draws, 7 losses), by defeating Heidenheim 3-1 at the Voith-Arena. Wolfsburg’s opening day celebrations mark only one loss in their last eight head-to-head encounters against Heidenheim (6 wins, 1 draw). Conversely, Heidenheim’s struggles at home persist, having won only two of 13 competitive matches in 2025 (2 draws, 9 losses).

Freiburg 1-3 Augsburg
Sandro Wagner had an excellent beginning as Augsburg’s manager, leading his team to a comfortable 3-1 victory at Freiburg, marking only their second-ever away win against them in 14 Bundesliga meetings. This was an ideal start for Augsburg, who ended a four-game losing streak in the league with an impressive performance.

Frankfurt 4-1 Werder Bremen
Eintracht Frankfurt started the new Bundesliga season strongly with a commanding 4-1 victory against Werder Bremen at Deutsche Bank Park, marking Bremen’s only win in their last 12 head-to-head matches. Building on their impressive third-place finish last season, the home team secured a convincing win, while Bremen faced consecutive losses following their 1-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal.

Leverkusen 1-2 Hoffenheim
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim broke their five-game losing streak against Bayer 04 Leverkusen with an impressive 2-1 victory on the opening day at the BayArena. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag faced a disappointing defeat in his Bundesliga debut as Leverkusen’s efforts to level the score were surprisingly weak. The team is now without a win in their last four Bundesliga matches (two draws, two losses) following a start to the season that Ten Hag would prefer to forget. Even more concerning, they have allowed rivals Bayern Munich to gain a three-point lead in the title race and will need significant improvement to secure a second championship in three years.

St Pauli 3-3 Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund began their Bundesliga season with a frustrating 3-3 draw on the road against St. Pauli, as two late goals from the Neighbourhood Kickers prevented Die Schwarzgelben from securing a third straight head-to-head win. Dortmund will likely be upset after losing a two-goal advantage and missing out on their 11th consecutive opening day victory, effectively giving Bayern Munich an early lead in the title race.

Mainz 0-1 FC Cologne
Mainz, reduced to 10 players for the last 30 minutes, were defeated 1-0 by newly-promoted Cologne in their Bundesliga opener, marking only their second home loss in eight head-to-head matches. Substitute Luca Waldschmidt delivered a cross that Marius Bülter gently headed in, securing Cologne’s first away win of the season and equaling their total away wins from their previous Bundesliga campaign in 2023/24 (8 draws, 8 losses).
Monchengladbach 0-0 Hamburger SV
Borussia Mönchengladbach were unable to break through newly-promoted Hamburger SV during the latter’s return to the Bundesliga, as the match at Borussia-Park ended in a 0-0 draw. While it wasn’t the outcome Gladbach hoped for, they were clearly the stronger team and now look forward to the return of attacking players, including their newly named captain Tim Kleindienst.
