Premier League Roundup, Matchday 2

Matchday 2 of the Premier League has concluded, featuring exciting matches, outstanding player displays, and unexpected outcomes. Below is the Premier League roundup for this round of games.

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Chelsea achieved their first win of the season by thrashing London rivals West Ham 5-1, marking West Ham’s ninth occasion starting the Premier League with back-to-back defeats. Potter, after collecting just nine points from his initial 10 home Premier League matches, set a new unwanted club record, surpassing Alan Curbishley and Avram Grant, who each earned 10 points in their first 10 home games. Additionally, Chelsea recorded their 33rd victory against the Hammers in this competition, with only Tottenham Hotspur having been defeated more often by Chelsea (37 times).

Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham

Tottenham continued their impressive start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, ending a run of six away league matches without a win. It was a surprisingly comfortable afternoon for Frank’s team, who have now earned a perfect six points from two games. Meanwhile, Manchester City still haven’t returned to their previous form, with their vulnerabilities highlighted by a side that has become one of Guardiola’s most challenging adversaries.

Burnley 2-0 Sunderland

Burnley secured their first Premier League victory of the season on their second attempt by defeating fellow newcomers Sunderland 2-0 at Turf Moor. With this win, Burnley have caught up to Sunderland in points, while Sunderland experienced their first loss of the season and faced a tough reality check following last week’s triumph over West Ham United.

Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa

Brentford secured all three points in their opening home Premier League match of the season by narrowly beating Aston Villa. This loss means Aston Villa have now gone three league games in a row without scoring for the first time since July 2020. The defeat also ends Villa’s unbeaten head-to-head run against Brentford (which stood at four wins and two draws), leaving Unai Emery’s team with only one point from their first two games, a disappointing start to their season. Meanwhile, Brentford delivered a significantly better performance, earning their first points under their new manager.

Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves

Bournemouth have started the 2025/26 Premier League season successfully on their second try, securing a narrow 1-0 win against a struggling Wolves side reduced to 10 men. With this win, Bournemouth aim to better their somewhat disappointing 40% win rate as home league favourites from last season. Meanwhile, Wolves are still yet to score this season and will face a potentially vital home match against Everton in a week’s time.

Arsenal 5-0 Leeds United

Arsenal secured their seventh consecutive victory against Leeds with a 5-0 win at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League. The match was comfortably won, allowing Arsenal to rise to the top of the league early in the season and match a Premier League record of 43 straight home games unbeaten against newly promoted teams. Meanwhile, Leeds’ seven-game winning run was brought to a halt.

Everton 2-0 Brighton

Everton secured their first-ever Premier League victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, earning three points with a 2-0 win over Brighton, aided by two assists from new signing Jack Grealish. Brighton struggled with composure in front of goal, but Everton delivered a performance fitting for the venue. The team will hope this marks the start of a successful season, while the Seagulls have now failed to win either of their first two Premier League matches for the first time since 2017.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Although Crystal Palace held the lead for much of the match, they couldn’t capitalize on their advantage against Nottingham Forest and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. This result extended their winless streak in Premier League head-to-head encounters to 11 games. Palace have begun their season with two draws, and converting these into victories is an obvious area for improvement for Oliver Glasner’s squad, who have drawn six of their last eight Premier League matches.

Fulham 1-1 Manchester United

Emile Smith Rowe scored with his very first touch after coming on as a second-half substitute, helping Fulham earn a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League and preventing their ninth consecutive home league defeat in their head-to-head encounters. In the final 10 minutes, both teams pushed hard for a winning goal, with Harry Maguire narrowly missing a close-range header for the Red Devils. That was the closest either team came to securing all three points, leading Amorim and United to settle for a draw. This leaves their struggling manager with just seven wins in his first 29 league matches in charge.

Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha came off the bench to net a winning goal in the 100th minute for Liverpool against a 10-man Newcastle United at St James’ Park, extending the Magpies’ winless streak in 18 league head-to-head matches (5 draws, 13 losses). The super substitute sealed the victory when, in the 100th minute, Ngumoha capitalized on Mohamed Salah’s low cross, skillfully curling the ball into the corner to secure all three points for the champions.
