Serie A Roundup, Matchday 1

The first matchday of the 2025/26 Serie A season featured exciting matches, unexpected outcomes, and outstanding displays from numerous players. This Serie A roundup provides an overview of the games from this round.

Sassuolo 0-2 Napoli

Napoli began their Serie A title defense with an easy 2-0 victory against newly-promoted Sassuolo, extending their unbeaten streak to 21 wins or draws in the last 23 head-to-head matches (14 wins, 7 draws). Antonio Conte’s team, which recorded 19 clean sheets last season, the highest in Europe’s top five leagues, started this match with another shutout, securing three points.

Genoa 0-0 Lecce

Genoa and Lecce began their 2025/26 Serie A seasons with a 0-0 draw at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. This result prevents Genoa from achieving back-to-back Serie A victories for the first time since January 2024, while Lecce managed to avoid continuing their poor streak of losing 10 out of their last 12 Saturday matches.

AS Roma 1-0 Bologna

Wesley’s goal in the second half made the difference as AS Roma defeated Bologna 1-0 in their Serie A season opener at the Stadio Olimpico, ending Bologna’s five-game unbeaten streak in league head-to-head matches, their longest run in this matchup since 1939. This victory, extended Roma’s unbeaten streak in Serie A to 23 matches. Meanwhile, Bologna suffered their first four consecutive league losses since August 2018.

AC Milan 1-2 Cremonese

AC Milan’s Serie A campaign began in the worst way possible with a 2-1 loss to newly promoted Cremonese, marking their first-ever home defeat against the Grigiorossi in Italy’s top division. Allegri and Milan might already be under pressure as they strive to reclaim the top spot in domestic football.

Como 2-0 Lazio

Como secured their first Serie A opening day victory since 1951 by defeating Lazio 2-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. In the end, Como settled for a two-goal win, a result that Fàbregas will be very pleased with. On the other hand, Lazio were outperformed throughout the match, leaving Sarri with significant challenges as he aims to guide the Biancocelesti back into European competition.

Cagliari 1-1 Fiorentina

After finishing last season with two consecutive wins, Fiorentina began their 2025/26 Serie A season on a disappointing note, conceding a stoppage-time goal to draw 1-1 against Cagliari at the Unipol Domus. This marked the ninth of Fiorentina’s last ten matches in which both teams have scored. Sebastiano Luperto headed in a free-kick delivery to secure a point for his team and new manager Fabiano Piscane on the opening day. Despite this, Cagliari have still not managed to defeat Fiorentina either home or away since November 2019, extending their winless streak to 10 games.

Juventus 2-0 Parma

Juventus kicked off the new Serie A season successfully by securing a 2-0 win over Parma at the Allianz Stadium, further worsening Parma’s disappointing 2025 record to only three wins in 21 league games (9 draws, 9 losses). This marked Juventus’ first victory in three head-to-head encounters and handed Carlos Cuesta a defeat in his debut match as Parma’s coach. Although there were some positive moments, Parma’s troubling form persists, and it may not be easily resolved ahead of their next game against Atalanta.

Atalanta 1-1 Pisa

Gianluca Scamacca scored on his return to the Atalanta team after more than a year away, preventing Pisa from securing a victory in their first Serie A season in 34 years as the match ended 1-1 in Bergamo. This draw marks the first time in eight seasons that Atalanta has not won on the opening weekend. While the point is a good outcome for the newcomers, Pisa have still not beaten Atalanta since 1985, though the number of matches between them is limited.

Udinese 1-1 Verona

Hellas Verona maintained their unbeaten streak against Udinese to six games by scoring a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw during the opening weekend of the new Serie A season. Both teams clearly pushed hard to secure a late winning goal, with neither willing to settle for a draw. However, a decisive goal never came, resulting in the teams sharing the points and keeping their all-time head-to-head record perfectly balanced (14 wins each, 17 draws).

Inter 5-0 Torino

Cristian Chivu had an ideal beginning in his debut Serie A game as Inter Milan’s manager, leading the Nerazzurri to a 5-0 win against Torino. This victory is Inter’s largest over I Granata since the 1958/59 season. The result puts Inter at the top of the early Serie A standings and is the first time since 2003 that the club has won their opening match under a foreign-born coach.
