Ajax Latest News: Steven Berghuis to miss Ajax’s opening three games after lashing out at fan

According to the Dutch football association (KNVB), Steven Berghuis will be absent from Ajax Amsterdam’s first three matches of the 2023-24 season due to an incident where he allegedly hit a supporter after a 3-1 defeat at FC Twente last month.

A video that is being shared on social media shows the midfielder attacking a person who seemed to be a supporter of Twente in front of the Ajax team bus. The incident was stopped by an official.

The Dutch player expressed regret for the occurrence at a later time.

“Steven Berghuis on Monday agreed to a settlement proposal from the professional football prosecutor of three matches’ exclusion, one of which was conditional,” the KNVB said.

“He will miss the first three league matches of the 2023-24 season as a result. That includes the overflowing registration of his fifth yellow card…”

At the beginning of the 2021-22 season, Berghuis transferred to Ajax from Feyenoord, which sparked controversy in the Netherlands because of the fierce competition between the two teams.

Despite finishing third in the Eredivisie and missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 2009, he was still recognized as Ajax’s player of the season.
