Ajax news today – Davy Klaassen allegedly struck with a cigarette lighter
Davy Klaassen of Ajax Amsterdam suffered a head injury after being struck by an object thrown from the stands, creating a lengthy delay before his side edged bitter rivals Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Wednesday to book a place in the Dutch Cup final.
After Klaassen scored, rival players near the corner flag caused a commotion in which the Netherlands midfielder was struck on the head, allegedly by a cigarette lighter.
Ajax players walked off the field, followed by Feyenoord players, whose assistant coach John de Wolf subsequently came out to scold home fans before the game resumed.
He asked Feyenoord supporters to “use your common sense” over the PA system.
The incident caused the game to be stopped for 28 minutes, and Klaassen had to be replaced soon after the game resumed, indicating that he was dizzy.
“I had a throbbing feeling around the wound and I also had trouble focusing, so I could have stayed on the pitch but that was not going to help me nor the team,” Klaassen told the Ajax website.
“It was hard… you don’t want to let it get to you but sometimes you have to put your pride aside and do what’s best for the team.”
A 32-year-old man was arrested, and the incident was probed, according to police.
