Blazing fire broke out in the Amsterdam Arena during Ajax’s game with Feyenoord on Sunday
Before the highly anticipated Dutch match, flares were fired off at one end of the Amsterdam Arena, creating frightening images. When they were extinguished, a fire broke out, with accounts claiming that flares caught a banner, feeding the flames.
Before the fire was put out, thick black smoke covered a huge chunk of the supporters behind the goal. Nobody was hurt, although it’s unclear if anyone was hurt. The match between Ajax and Feyenoord, dubbed De Klassieker, proceeded anyway.
It was a fascinating contest, with reigning Eredivisie champions claiming all three points in a tense 3-2 victory.

Erik ten Hag’s team recovered from their Champions League exit in midweek by moving 11 points clear of Feyenoord and maintaining a two-point advantage over PSV at the top of the table. But it was the visitors, through Luis Sinisterra, who broke the deadlock in the eighth minute. Midway through the first half, in-form Sebastien Haller equalized.
Before the half-hour mark, Guus Til restored Feyenoord’s lead for the second time. With 12 minutes left, Dusan Tadic, a former Southampton midfielder, equalized. Antony then decided the game eight minutes later, giving Ajax a huge boost in their quest to defend their Eredivisie crown.
