Arsenal transfer news: Jurrien Timber is set to join Arsenal following agreement with The Gunners and Ajax

Arsenal Football Club has reached a comprehensive agreement with Ajax for the transfer of defender Jurrien Timber. The Premier League side will pay a base fee of €40 million (£34.3 million), with an additional €5 million (£4.3 million) in achievable bonuses included in the deal, according to The Athletic.

Arsenal had initially made a £30 million offer for the highly-rated player last month, but Ajax held out for a higher fee given his potential and the remaining two years on his contract with the Dutch club.

During the 2022-23 campaign, Timber made 34 appearances in the Eredivisie for Ajax, contributing two goals and two assists. Despite an underwhelming season for the club, the versatile center-back, who can also operate on the right side of defense, showed promise and caught the attention of top clubs. In addition to his club appearances, Timber has represented the Netherlands on 15 occasions.

This move comes as Arsenal continues its active summer transfer window, with the club also closing in on the signing of West Ham United’s Declan Rice for a record-breaking £105 million move. Last week, Arsenal made their first signing of the summer, securing the services of Kai Havertz from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £65 million.

The addition of Jurrien Timber to Arsenal’s defensive ranks will provide Mikel Arteta’s side with increased depth and quality. As the Gunners look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, as they hope to pip Manchester City to the title this time around.
