AS Roma vs Athletic Bilbao Review
Ivan Jurić’s Roma missed the opportunity to secure consecutive victories after a late goal resulted in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao, who have only won once in their last 10 matches in Italy. Following the controversial dismissal of the iconic Daniele De Rossi, Roma appeared to move on by achieving their first win of the season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Udinese over the weekend.
The Giallorossi started strong at the Olimpico, dominating possession with over two-thirds of the ball, but they had difficulty converting that control into scoring opportunities. However, just after the half-hour mark, a swift counter-attack saw Tommaso Baldanzi pass to Angeliño on the left, and the Spanish full-back delivered a perfect cross for Artem Dovbyk, who headed in his third goal in as many games, giving Roma a 1-0 lead at halftime.
After a lackluster performance in the first half, Ernesto Valverde’s team emerged with renewed energy and recorded their first shot on target in the 51st minute, although it was a weak attempt from Unai Gómez that Mile Svilar easily saved. Roma sought to extend their lead and nearly scored just before the hour mark when Matias Soulé capitalized on a defensive error from Athletic. However, after entering the box, the Argentine’s shot was blocked by Julen Agirrezabala.
In the last 30 minutes, the visitors intensified their efforts to find an equalizer, but the Giallorossi defense held strong, managing several crosses into their area. Both coaches made numerous substitutions, which disrupted the game’s rhythm, benefiting the home team. Just when it seemed Roma would secure the win with minimal threat to their goal, the Spanish side equalized in the 86th minute. A free-kick to the back post was headed back across the goal by Unai Núñez, allowing Aitor Paredes to score with a header.
Ultimately, not securing the win will frustrate Jurić, but Roma has shown notable progress in their performances since he took over a week ago. Athletic has continued their strong start to the season, achieving four wins and two draws in eight matches across all competitions, managing to earn a commendable point after being behind for a large portion of the game.
