Ashley Young signs for Everton on a one year contract
Everton Football Club has officially announced the signing of Ashley Young on a one-year contract. The 38-year-old English full-back became a free agent after leaving Aston Villa at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Young will join Everton until June 2024.
The Merseyside club was seeking cover in the full-back positions and, with a tight budget, made Young their first signing of the summer. Young brings a wealth of experience to the team, having previously played for Watford, Manchester United, and Inter Milan in addition to his time at Aston Villa.
Young expressed his delight at joining Everton, highlighting the importance of manager Sean Dyche’s role in his decision. Having previously worked with Dyche at Watford, Young spoke highly of his passion, work ethic, and ambition. The player’s confidence in Dyche’s plans to turn Everton’s fortunes around was a significant factor in his decision to sign for the club. Young also emphasized the size of Everton as a massive club and praised the passionate fanbase, viewing their support as a fantastic opportunity.
During the 2022-23 season, Young featured prominently for Aston Villa, primarily as a full-back, helping the team secure European football. He made 29 appearances in the Premier League, contributing with a goal. His adaptability and experience will undoubtedly provide Everton with valuable options in defense.
As Everton continues their pre-season preparations, Young’s arrival will add depth and quality to the squad, especially considering the absence of left-back Vitalii Mykolenko due to injury and the ongoing rehabilitation of club captain Seamus Coleman.
