Barcelona is demolishing Camp Nou to start a refurbishment of the facility

Barcelona has initiated the process of refurbishing their stadium, as cranes were observed demolishing parts of the Camp Nou during the weekend. The club unveiled their ambitious £1.2 billion project in July 2022 and construction work commenced last month.

The construction project is expected to last for four years and will result in an increase in the stadium’s capacity from 99,000 to 105,000. Additionally, the Camp Nou will be equipped with a retractable roof and solar-powered lighting. The surrounding area will also see the addition of a hotel, ice rink, and offices.

Due to this, the team will move to a different location for the 2023/24 season and will have their home games at Montjuic’s Olympic Stadium in the city. This stadium was previously used by Espanyol, the city’s rivals, from 1997 to 2009. Additionally, the venue was also the host of the 1992 summer Olympic Games.

President Joan Laporta recently defended the move, telling reporters: “To minimise risks and protect next season’s income, we will maintain virtually full capacity next season (at the Olympic Stadium) and proceed to demolish the third tier when we go to Montjuic.”

“Demolition any earlier would have meant having to go next season with just 50% capacity.”
