In a recent meeting with Messi’s father, Jorge, Laporta and the two men discussed Messi’s potential future at Camp Nou should he decide to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the current campaign.
As his PSG contract nears its end, Messi’s destiny is in his own hands. He has the choice to prolong it by a further 12 months, to renew with the Ligue 1 team, or to leave and join another team.
Inter Miami of the Major League Soccer is also eager to persuade Messi to quit PSG, but according to 90min, the 35-year-old is worried about leaving Europe and losing his chance to contend for future Ballon d’Or trophies.
After his departure from the club caused frustrations to mount, Barcelona is trying to persuade Messi to return to Camp Nou, which includes mending fences with his family. Sources have confirmed that both parties are willing to put their differences aside if Messi wants to make the move.
Messi’s plans for his career on the international stage and his ambition to compete in the 2024 Copa America have also influenced his choice to continue weighing his alternatives.
Although he has emphasized that Messi will make the final decision, Barcelona manager Xavi has publicly expressed his desire to work with the World Cup winner.
“I’ve already said that this is his home and the doors are open to him, he’s a friend, we’re in constant contact,” Xavi told the media.
“It will depend on him, on what he wants to do in his future. This is his home, there is no doubt. The best footballer in history would always fit in.”
