Barcelona transfer news: Barcelona continue to make new signings despite financial issues
Barcelona has made their second acquisition of the season, after securing Ilkay Gundogan. Inigo Martínez, who recently finished his contract with Athletic Bilbao, has signed a two-year deal with Barcelona, including a buy-out clause worth 400 million euros.
The defender had already agreed to join Barcelona several months ago, and there was a previous attempt to sign him last summer, which was rejected by Bilbao as they hoped to persuade him to extend his contract.
However, this was not the case as the player had already promised Barcelona’s directors that he would terminate his contract with Athletic and leave without any transfer fee. This decision caused controversy in Bilbao. He recently underwent a thorough medical examination to address his physical issues from the previous season.
Fortunately, he passed the examination and all that was left was the formalities of finalizing the agreement. In order to comply with Fair Play regulations, the signing was delayed until the start of the 23/24 financial-sporting season. As a result, Inigo Martinez is now officially a Barcelona player until June 30, 2025, with a release clause of 400 million euros.
