Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen Review
Bayern Munich was unable to extend their lead over Bayer Leverkusen, as they settled for a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena, marking the end of their perfect winning streak under new manager Vincent Kompany. With both teams being the highest-scoring in the league prior to the match, the Oktoberfest-celebrating fans at the Allianz Arena were not surprised by the attacking play from both sides.
Bayern had the better opportunities, with Jamal Musiala narrowly missing the post with a bouncing shot and Michael Olise’s free-kick hitting the top of the net. As the first half progressed, Bayern increasingly controlled possession and created chances, but they were shocked when Leverkusen scored with their first shot on target in the 30th minute.
Granit Xhaka received a pass from Álex Grimaldo at the edge of the penalty area and set up Robert Andrich, who fired a powerful shot through a crowd of players into the bottom corner. After scoring in every half during Kompany’s brief time in charge, it was only a matter of time before Bayern equalized, and they did so in spectacular fashion before halftime.
Aleksandar Pavlović seized a weak clearance from 30 yards out and unleashed a stunning, looping volley that found its way into Lukas Hradecky’s top corner. This goal was well-deserved for Bayern, who nearly took the lead shortly after the second half began when Serge Gnabry volleyed Harry Kane’s cross onto the post and then hit the bar on the rebound.
Aside from a late attempt by Nathan Tella, Leverkusen struggled to make an impact offensively in the second half, and the hosts also saw their opportunities diminish as the match ended in a draw. This result keeps Bayern three points ahead of Leverkusen as they aim to reclaim the Bundesliga title after Leverkusen broke their 11-year reign over the Meisterschale. Xabi Alonso can take solace in the fact that Die Werkself went on to win the trophy after drawing this same match last season, and fans are looking forward to what could be a crucial rematch in February.
