Brazilian forward Marta, aged 37, has been selected by coach Pia Sundhage, aged 63, to participate in her sixth World Cup. The tournament will take place in Australia and New Zealand starting on July 20.
Marta, who has been named FIFA World Player of the Year six times, will be leading Brazil’s efforts to win their first Women’s World Cup title. She will be joined by other seasoned players including Debinha (31), Tamires (35), and Andressa Alves (30).
Nevertheless, the previous coach of the United States and Sweden does not promise that the leading goal scorer in the history of the Women’s World Cup will be included in the initial lineup.
“Marta is the queen, she is an icon. Just being around her is contagious,” said Sundhage on Tuesday.
“If she will be in the starting lineup I don’t know, not yet. She will play the role I will give her and I am sure she will do well.”
Brazil will commence a training camp this week and will have a farewell friendly against Chile on Sunday before heading to Australia.
