Bundesliga: Bayern vs Dortmund live

Preview

The drama at Bavaria continues on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when Bayern takes on Bundesliga title rivals Dortmund in a critical edition of Der Klassiker. The defending champions trail their visitors by one point in the table following a slump that saw Julian Nagelsmann ruthlessly sacked and replaced by ex-Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel. Ahead of their journey to Allianz Arena, Dortmund sit top of the league standings and have won nine of their last ten league games.

After losing their grip on the Bundesliga top spot just before international football interfered, Bayern Munich took drastic action to prevent their season from going south by firing their 35-year-old head coach and hiring a Champions League winner in his place. Following a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen last time out, the Rekordmeister have already lost more points in 10 games this year than they did in 15 games before the winter break. When combined with off-field concerns about Nagelsmann, such a blunder saw Bayern’s hierarchy move to end his brief reign in Bavaria. Bayern have won the Bundesliga for the 10th time in a row, so they are still favourites to win it all, but a defeat on Saturday would be a huge setback to their chances of winning number 11 in May.

Earlier this season, Die Schwarzgelben struggled for consistency and were more concerned with finishing in the top four than challenging for their first title in 11 years, falling as low as sixth before the World Cup. Fast forward to the end of March, and Dortmund finished a matchday top of the standings for the first time since 2019 with a 6-1 thrashing of Koln, in which skipper Marco Reus surpassed Michael Zorc as the club’s all-time Bundesliga top scorer. Dortmund have now extended their league unbeaten record to ten matches, a run that includes nine wins and a draw in the Revierderby, and also racked up a division-high 30 goals in 2023 and earned ten more points than Saturday’s opponents.

Head-to-head

Dortmund ended Bayern’s run of eight straight victories in this matchup earlier this season by holding the Bavarians to a 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga.

Prediction

Crucial games like this often end in a safety-first deadlock, but both of these teams like to go for the jugular, so a few goals could be on the cards. Bayern Munich, are best positioned to swing the title race in their direction, but not without a few thrills and spills.
