Chelsea vs Wolves Review
Chelsea temporarily climbed to second place in the Premier League standings after beating Wolves 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, marking their fourth win in five league matches. Enzo Maresca made at least seven changes to his lineup for the sixth consecutive game following their 2-2 draw with Qarabağ. As a result, there was little sign of fatigue early on against Wolves, who were managed by interim coach James Collins after Vítor Pereira was dismissed. Within three minutes, Sam Johnstone had to tip an Enzo Fernández free-kick over the crossbar, then made a crucial save to block Alejandro Garnacho. Fernández also missed a header from a Marc Cucurella cross-shot as Chelsea appeared to be increasing the pressure.

That turned out to be a false alarm, as for the rest of the half, the home team was kept at bay by their determined and well-organized opponents. When the halftime whistle blew, few would have argued that Wolves deserved to be level at the break. However, Chelsea began the second half with the same intensity as they did the first, and this time they capitalized on it. Garnacho, who had been one of their most impressive players in the opening period, delivered a cross that found Malo Gusto at the far post, allowing the Frenchman to score the first goal of his professional career.

This goal seemed to energize Wolves, who immediately increased their effort in search of an equalizer. But Chelsea’s squad, full of talented players, saw one of their substitutes make a key contribution to the second goal. Estêvão had only just come onto the field when he beat his defender on the right flank and cut the ball back for João Pedro, who calmly finished past Johnstone. The goal gave Maresca’s team much greater control over a match that had the potential to slip away from them.

Soon after, Chelsea increased their lead on a counterattack. Garnacho was involved once more, racing down the left side before passing to Pedro Neto, who confidently celebrated scoring against his former team. That goal effectively decided the match, allowing Chelsea to comfortably secure the victory as Maresca rested some additional players. This win brings the Blues to within six points of league leaders Arsenal. Meanwhile, Wolves remain winless in the top division this season following this latest loss. Whoever takes over as their permanent manager will face a tough challenge in keeping the team among the top tier.
