CONCACAF Nations League News
The heated enmity between the United States and Mexico will be rekindled this summer when the two countries meet in the 2022/23 CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.
The semifinals will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 15, 2023 and will decide which team advances to the competition’s final, where they will face the victor of the other semifinal between Canada and Panama.
The USMNT are the defending CONCACAF Nations League champion, having defeated Mexico in the finals back in 2021. In a thrilling match where, Christian Pulisic’s extra-time penalty gave the Americans a 3-2 win.
Mexico, on the other hand, will be looking for vengeance after failing to beat the US in their previous four encounters. Both sides will be eager to show their worth, so the stakes will be high.
Mexico has a point to make to their fans after being eliminated from the 2022 World Cup in the group stage and advancing to the Nations League semifinals on the back of a 2-2 draw with Jamaica. The USMNT, on the other side, will want to maintain their lead over their archrivals.
In their total head-to-head rivalry, the United States has won 21 times and Mexico has won 33 times, with both teams playing out 11 draws.
The Nations League does not have a draw for its semifinals and finals. Instead, the four teams are placed based on their group stage performance. The USMNT ended with ten points, the joint-most of any team in group stage play, and the Americans had a better goal differential than Panama.
Mexico, on the other hand, ended with the fewest points of any group winner, eight points. The USMNT, as the top seed, will face Mexico, while Canada will face Panama in the other semifinal match up.
Some may argue that it is too early to predict who will win this match, but I believe the USMNT’s tenacity and youthful core will propel them to the finals to retain their title. Tyler Adams and Mckennie will be the players to keep an eye on in this contest.
