Darwin Nunez has been given the no.9 shirt at Liverpool with Luis Diaz also taking on the no.7 shirt

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez will don the iconic No 9 shirt for the upcoming season, filling the void left by Roberto Firmino’s departure. Nunez, 24, initially wore the No 27 shirt after joining the club from Benfica last summer in a high-profile transfer worth up to €100 million (£85 million, $112 million). He previously wore the No 9 during his time at the Portuguese club.

To accommodate the change, Liverpool has offered a special arrangement for fans who have already purchased new 2023-24 home and away jerseys printed with Nunez’s name and the No 27. Nunez himself will personally reimburse these fans with a like-for-like exchange for a ‘Darwin 9’ shirt, ensuring their continued support for the player.

Nunez is not the only Liverpool player to change shirt numbers during the off-season. Winger Luis Diaz has swapped his No 23 jersey for the No 7 shirt, which became available after James Milner’s free transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Nunez had a good debut season in England, recording 15 goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions. Liverpool will be hoping that his transition to the No 9 shirt will bring further success on the field.

The upcoming Premier League season kicks off for Liverpool with an away match against Chelsea on August 13.
