Chelsea’s David Datro Fofana has joined Union Berlin
Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana has completed a season-long loan move to Bundesliga side Union Berlin. The 20-year-old Ivory Coast international will spend the upcoming season with the German club, with no option-to-buy included in the deal.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Fofana stated, “Union have developed extremely strongly in the last few years and it excites me a lot to be a part of this in the coming season. The club has made a long and hard effort to find me, and now I want to repay that with good performances.”
Chelsea acquired Fofana from Molde in January, and he signed a contract with the Premier League club until 2029, with an option to extend for an additional year. Last season, Fofana made three appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea, who finished 12th in the standings.
Fofana’s loan departure comes as Chelsea bolstered their forward line during the summer transfer window. The arrival of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig and Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal has added strength and depth to the attacking options at the west London club. Additionally, striker Armando Broja, who had been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, is expected to feature in Chelsea’s pre-season preparations.
Union Berlin, who finished fourth in the German top flight last season, will compete in the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. Fofana’s loan move provides him with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a competitive league and contribute to Union Berlin’s ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
