Dortmund vs RB Leipzig Review
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig had to settle for a 1-1 draw in an exciting Bundesliga match, extending Dortmund’s unbeaten run to nine games across all competitions (6 wins, 3 draws). Dortmund came into the game with 13 points from their first five Bundesliga matches, their best start in eight years, and were eager to maintain pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich. Their opponents, Leipzig, were close behind and quickly took the lead after just seven minutes when a long ball into the box was headed down by Assan Ouédraogo, enabling Christoph Baumgartner to score from close range.
However, that lead was short-lived, as Yan Couto’s low, deflected shot found the back of the net after a clever pass from Serhou Guirassy. The entertaining first half nearly saw a third goal around the 30-minute mark, but Rômulo Cardoso’s celebrations were cut short when he was ruled offside after being played through on goal by David Raum down the left side. Having finished the first half on the back foot, Leipzig took control after the break, with Rômulo heading a deep cross just over the crossbar, and then Antonio Nusa’s angled shot forced a save from Gregor Kobel.
The home team responded well to the second-half pressure, creating a good chance for Guirassy, who struck the ball weakly, but the home fans soon voiced their support loudly. Yan Diomande’s introduction from the Leipzig bench energized the visitors in the final quarter of the game, halting Dortmund’s momentum and shifting the flow once again. Refusing to simply defend, the home team pushed for a late winner, with Julian Brandt’s looping header going just wide, Nicolas Seiwald making a crucial block to deny Fábio Silva a sure goal, and Péter Gulácsi stopping Ramy Bensebaini’s late attempt.
A draw is not a bad outcome for either team, Dortmund remain unbeaten in 14 league matches, including 11 wins and 3 draws dating back to last season. Although Leipzig’s four-game winning streak in the league ended, the draw keeps them in third place, just one point behind Dortmund, against whom they have lost only two of their last nine head-to-head encounters.
