EURO 2024 Recap, Round 3

Here is a recap of the third round of EURO 2024, which featured unexpected outcomes and standout individual performances.

Group A

Switzerland tied with Germany 1-1 to secure second place, while Hungary defeated Scotland 1-0 to claim third place in group A. Germany finished at the top of the group with 7 points, followed by Switzerland in second with 5 points, Hungary in third with 3 points, and Scotland in last place with 1 point. Despite their win, Hungary did not advance to the next round as one of the best third-placed teams due to their low goal difference. Switzerland will play against Italy in the next round, and Germany will face Denmark.

Group B

Italy managed to score a late goal to draw with Croatia 1-1, while Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Albania to finish the group stage as the only team to win all their matches in EURO 2024. Spain ended with 9 points, Italy came in second with 4 points, Croatia took third with 2 points, and Albania finished last with 1 point. Croatia’s 2 points were not enough to help them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, marking a disappointing end to their journey. Italy will face Switzerland in the round of 16, while Spain will take on Georgia.

Group C

The group C matchday was uneventful, with England and Slovenia drawing 0-0, and Denmark and Serbia also ending in a goalless draw. England led the group with five points, followed by Denmark and Slovenia with three points each, and Serbia in last place with two points. England, Denmark, and Slovenia all advanced to the EURO 2024 knockout stages. England will play against Slovakia, Denmark will face Germany, and Slovenia will take on Portugal.

Group D

Austria claimed an exciting 3-2 win over the Netherlands to clinch the top spot in group D with six points. Despite their loss to Austria, the Netherlands managed to secure a place in the next round by finishing third in the group with four points. Poland, although eliminated before their final group match against France, managed to draw 1-1 with the French. France ended the group in second place with five points, while Poland finished last in the group with one point. In the EURO 2024 round of 16 stage, Austria will play against Turkey, France will face Belgium, and the Netherlands will take on Romania.

Group E

Ukraine finished their tournament with a 0-0 tie against Belgium, but it was not enough to advance to the next round as Slovakia and Romania also drew 1-1. All teams in group E ended with four points each, but Romania claimed the top spot due to scoring more goals than Belgium, who finished in second place, with Slovakia in third. Ukraine ended up in last place, the only team in the group unable to progress despite also having four points. In the EURO 2024 round of 16, Romania will play against the Netherlands, Belgium will face France, and Slovakia will take on England.

Group F

Georgia surprised Portugal by winning 2-0, earning a spot in the round of 16 with a third-place finish and four points. They will face Spain in the knockout stage. Turkey also won against Czechia, finishing second with six points and setting up a round of 16 match with Turkey. Portugal finished at the top of the group with six points and will play against Slovenia in the EURO 2024 knockout stage. Czechia, on the other hand, only managed to secure one point and will head home after three games.
