Europa League Final Review: Sevilla win 7th title as Mourinho gets first European final defeat

Sevilla dominated over AS Roma in the Europa League final penalty shootout and came out victorious due to the heroics of Bonou

Sevilla once again proved their mastery of the Europa League by winning the match-ending penalty shootout against AS Roma in Budapest, Hungary, to win their seventh Europa League championship. With seven triumphs in as many tries, the Spanish team has a spotless record in Europa League finals.

The fact that Sevilla won their fifth Europa League championship in the last ten seasons in the final demonstrated their exceptional performance in Europe’s secondary club tournament. In terms of the number of times they have raised the trophy, this accomplishment outpaces that of any other team.

Sevilla’s victory guarantees them a spot in the coveted UEFA Champions League for the next season, despite a slightly unimpressive form in the domestic league, where they are predicted to finish in the middle of the table. Regardless of their domestic form, this is a testimonial to their continued excellence in European competition.

The game was a key turning point in Jose Mourinho’s brilliant career on the opposite side of the field. Mourinho lost a UEFA final for the first time in his illustrious career as a manager. In his five prior final appearances, he had won two Champions League championships, two Europa League titles and one Europa Conference League title. Despite being dissatisfied with the result, Mourinho’s prior achievements cannot be discounted.

The game itself got off to a sluggish start, with just two shots being recorded in the first 30 minutes. However, a brilliant moment came in the 35th minute when Gianluca Mancini and Paulo Dybala joined for a skillfully executed counterattack. Ivan Rakitic was taken out of play by Bryan Cristante, who then passed the ball to Mancini, who swiftly produced a deft through pass that split Sevilla’s defense and allowed Dybala to score with a powerful left-footed effort.

When the second half started, Roma tried to protect their advantage by not taking any attempts on goal between the 36th and 67th minute. But Sevilla stepped up their offensive pressure, barraging their opponents with crosses, finally leading to a key error. A tempting pass from Jesus Navas was played into the six-yard box, and Mancini unintentionally redirected the ball into his own goal.

As the game went on, the referee and video review rejected penalty requests made by both teams. After Lucas Ocampos was fouled in the box, Sevilla first earned a penalty, but it was later reversed on review. Fernando seemed to handle the ball while blocking a cross, but Roma’s protests were denied.

After extra time, no team was able to break the tie, therefore the decision was finally determined by a tense penalty shootout. Mancini and Roger Ibanez missed their penalty shot attempts, allowing Gonzalo Montiel to win it for the Spanish team as Sevilla went on to win.
