Feyenoord has won the Eredivisie, making them the Champions of Netherlands
On Monday, over 100,000 supporters of Feyenoord came together in Rotterdam’s city center to commemorate their team’s 16th Dutch league championship, which is only the fourth in the last three decades. Prior to the team’s appearance on the balcony at noon, numerous fans were already singing and dancing on the streets in front of the town hall.
A supporter expressed to RTV Rijnmond that they have been present since 5:30am, but their dedication is unwavering as Feyenoord has become the champion.
On Sunday, Feyenoord won the Eredivisie championship for the first time since 2017 by defeating Go Ahead Eagles 3-0. This victory led to exuberant celebrations in the port city that continued all night.
“Winning a championship is great, but achieving it with Feyenoord has something special, seeing what it does to all these people here and because it doesn’t happen every year,” Feyenoord coach Arne Slot said.
To prevent riots like those that occurred during previous celebrations, the city scheduled official festivities for midday on Monday. The streets in front of the town hall were closed off early to prevent overcrowding, and police searched fans for fireworks while alcohol was prohibited.
Despite over a hundred arrests for vandalism, drunkenness, and assaulting police during Sunday evening’s festivities, the mayor reported that there were no major incidents.
