Folarin Balogun switches allegiance to play for the USMNT
On Tuesday, US Soccer announced that Folarin Balogun, a striker for Arsenal, has chosen to play for the United States. FIFA has given approval for him to switch his international allegiance from England, where he had previously played for the Under-21 team.
Balogun is currently on loan at Reims in Ligue 1. Balogun was born in Brooklyn, New York, but grew up in England. He can also represent Nigeria because of his parents. He is anticipated to join the US squad for the CONCACAF Nations League Finals in the coming month.
This season, Balogun has managed to score 19 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games for Reims. On Tuesday, FIFA authorized a single alteration of association.
“My decision to represent the United States came together with my family,” said Balogun.
“In the end it became a no-brainer, but for sure it’s just something I wanted to do and it feels like I’m at home here.”
