Fulham News Latest: Fulham Football Club has officially confirmed the signing of defender Calvin Bassey from Ajax.
The transfer deal, reported to be around €21 million (£18 million), has been finalized, and Bassey has inked a four-year contract with Fulham, extending until the summer of 2027. The club also holds an option to extend the contract for an additional year.
The 23-year-old Bassey, who had four years remaining on his Ajax contract, expressed his excitement about joining Fulham, describing the club as a big and quality team playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world. He also highlighted the appeal of returning to London, which is his hometown. Bassey previously spent two years at Rangers, where he made a total of 65 appearances and won the Scottish league title in 2021, followed by the Scottish Cup the next year.
Having joined Ajax last summer, Bassey made 39 appearances for the Dutch side, contributing one goal and five assists during a challenging season. Despite the difficult campaign for Ajax, he caught the attention of multiple clubs, and Brighton & Hove Albion also showed interest in signing him.
The Nigerian international, who made his debut for the national team in March 2022, is considered a versatile defender and is expected to strengthen Fulham’s defensive line. The club’s vice-chairman, Tony Khan, expressed his delight in welcoming Bassey, emphasizing the player’s potential for growth and development at Fulham.
The completion of Bassey’s signing comes amidst a busy transfer period for Fulham, which also recently secured the services of striker Raul Jimenez. With these additions to the squad, Fulham aims to build on their achievements from last season and make a better impact in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
