Hansi Flick has been dismissed from his role as the head coach of the Germany men’s national football team following a series of disappointing results.
The decision came just one day after Germany suffered a 4-1 defeat to Japan in an international friendly.
Supporters expressed their frustration with the team’s performance during the match, and Flick’s fate was sealed shortly thereafter.
The president of the German Football Association (DFB), Bernd Neuendorf, released a statement explaining the decision: “The committees agreed that the senior men’s national team needs a new impulse after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence with a view to the European Championship in our own country. For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions in my tenure so far because I value Hansi Flick and his co-coaches as football experts and people. However, sporting success has top priority for the DFB. Therefore, the decision was inevitable.”
Flick had been in charge of the German national team since August 2021, taking over from Joachim Low. He had previously enjoyed a successful tenure as the head coach of Bayern Munich, winning the treble in the 2019-2020 season.
However, his time with the national team had been marked by inconsistent results. Germany had won just four of their last 16 matches under Flick, and their performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup saw them eliminated in the group stage.
Flick’s assistants, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, were also relieved of their duties.
Rudi Voller, Hannes Wolf, and Sandro Wagner have been appointed to take charge of Germany’s upcoming match against France. The German FA is aiming to find a replacement for Flick as soon as possible.
The decision to dismiss Flick is a significant one, as it marks the first time in the history of the German national team that a head coach has been sacked from the role.
Germany will host the UEFA European Championship in the near future, and the DFB is hoping to bring in a new coach who can provide fresh impetus to the team ahead of the tournament.
