Girona vs Real Madrid Review
Girona secure a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in La Liga, which means they have now lost only one of their last five matches in Spain’s top division, and they also prevented Los Blancos from regaining first place in the standings. Both teams started the game in a disjointed manner, largely due to Girona’s very defensive approach. The first notable chance came when Real Madrid’s Arda Güler fired a shot wide, followed shortly by Kylian Mbappé, who missed an opportunity by shooting over the bar despite having a clear chance.

Vinicius Júnior repeatedly missed chances at one end, while Viktor Tsygankov had the game’s first shot on target at the other. As the first half progressed, Los Blancos dominated possession but frequently lacked precision in their final passes. When they did connect well, like with a powerful header from Eder Militão, Girona’s goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made an outstanding reflex save. Mbappé appeared to have put Real ahead with a scrappy goal just before halftime, but a VAR review disallowed it due to a handball. In the final seconds of the first half, Azzedine Ounahi scored a curling shot that left Thibaut Courtois frozen.

As expected, Real took control at the start of the second half, but Girona’s two defensive lines of four made it challenging. Courtois made an incredible save from Vladyslav Vanat as the game approached the 60-minute mark, and Vinicius was denied an equalizer by an offside call as Madrid began to find their rhythm. Later, Vinicius won a penalty after being fouled by Hugo Rincón, and Mbappé confidently converted the spot-kick. Vitor Reis really should have done better with a free header, and as the match became a bit messy, both Mbappé and Vinicius missed good opportunities.

In the final moments, both teams came close but couldn’t secure a winning goal. This result means Girona have drawn four of the six league games in which they scored first this season (winning two), although earning a point against stronger opponents means they remain in the relegation zone only due to goal difference. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are just one point behind league leaders Barcelona after 14 matchdays, keeping the title race exciting.
