Hoffenheim announced on Monday that they have secured the services of Hungarian defender Attila Szalai from Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Szalai, who previously played for Apollon Limassol in Cyprus, joined Fenerbahce in January 2021.

During his time there, he contributed to their victory in the Turkish Cup during the 2022-23 season and helped them secure a second-place finish in the Turkish top division, with Galatasaray claiming the title. Szalai has signed a four-year contract with Hoffenheim.

“It is our clear goal to further stabilize our defence and Attila has already proven his qualities internationally,” Hoffenheim

Managing Director Alexander Rosen told the club website.

Hoffenheim did not reveal the exact amount of the transfer fee, but according to German media, the agreement could be valued at around 12 million euros.

“I had several options for my sporting future, but I made a conscious decision to go with Hoffenheim. I really wanted to play in the Bundesliga and I’m convinced that it’s the right step for me,” Szalai said.

Szalai played his first match for Hungary in November 2019 during a friendly game against Uruguay. Since then, he has represented his country in 35 matches. He was selected to be part of Hungary’s squad for Euro 2020.
