The Premier League head of referees has spoken about the in-game VAR audio calls that could be made to the public from next season
According to Howard Webb, the head of referees, it is probable that there will be an increase in the release of audio recordings of VAR decisions related to important events in Premier League matches in the upcoming season.
The first instance of in-game audio being released for significant decisions occurred when Webb appeared on the Monday Night Football show with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher to analyze incidents from the current season.
Webb presented visual and auditory evidence of conversations between referees on the field and VAR officials regarding in-game scenarios, and clarified the reasoning behind the verdicts.
“We’re looking to do this (release audio) as much as we possibly can,” Professional Game Match Officials Limited chief Webb said on the show, noting that FIFA would not allow them to play the audio live during the game.
“Tonight is obviously something new. We’re making a small step forward. Going forward into next season we will look to do more of the same.”
The Premier League implemented VAR at the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
