Ipswich vs Liverpool Review
Arne Slot began his tenure as Liverpool manager with a 2-0 win against Ipswich Town at Portman Road, thanks to an impressive showing by Mohamed Salah who scored and provided an assist.
Liverpool had difficulty asserting themselves in the first half. Their best chance came in the 45th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold shot over the bar from just outside the box. On the other hand, Ipswich managed to challenge Alisson Becker twice, with Jacob Greaves and Omari Hutchinson testing him, but both were straightforward saves for the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Luis Díaz posed a threat on two occasions, but neither of his attempts worried Christian Walton. Diogo Jota, however, missed a clear opportunity by heading wide from six yards out while unmarked. Nevertheless, the Portuguese forward soon found the net, converting Mohamed Salah’s low pass to score the first goal of the game.
Soon after, Salah found the net himself, tapping the ball past Walton after it came to him in the box. This goal marked another milestone for the Egyptian, as he now holds the record for the most opening-day goals (nine) in Premier League history. The Reds had additional opportunities to increase their lead, but the two goals they scored were sufficient to secure all three points.
This victory extends Liverpool’s unbeaten streak on opening day to 13 matches, and while tougher challenges await them this season, Slot and his team can take pride in their control during the second half. Likewise, Kieran McKenna understands that his team’s fight to avoid relegation won’t solely depend on their performance against the league’s top teams.
