Kieran Tierney, a left-back for Arsenal, has agreed to a season-long loan with Real Sociedad in Spain.
- Kieran Tierney lost his place under Arteta following Zinchenko’s transfer.
- Tierney has joined Real Sociedad on a season-long loan.
- Arsenal initially wanted a permanent transfer but Sociedad was only interested in a loan.
The decision comes as Tierney had not played in any of Arsenal’s first three Premier League games of the season, which may have indicated a shift in his football career.
Tierney first connected with Arsenal in 2019, and he played in 124 matches while a member of the team. However, injuries have plagued him throughout his career, which could have impacted this surprise choice.
Arsenal formally announced the loan arrangement and sent Tierney their best wishes for his stay at Real Sociedad. The action itself shows that Tierney has a new chance to display his abilities in a new football environment.
‘Kieran Tierney has joined LaLiga side Real Sociedad on loan for the 2023/24 season,’ confirmed an Arsenal statement.
‘Everyone at Arsenal wishes Kieran all the best this coming season with Real Sociedad’.
A noteworthy aspect of this transfer is Tierney’s interaction with fellow Arsenal teammate and captain, Martin Odegaard. Prior to the loan move, Tierney revealed that he had spoken to Odegaard, who previously had a loan stint with Real Sociedad during the 2019-20 season. Odegaard’s positive impressions of the city, the fans, and the club seem to have played a role in Tierney’s decision.
‘My first impressions have been so good, everyone I meet have been so friendly, the city is so nice and the stadium is beautiful, Tierney said.
‘It is a big change [coming to La Liga] but something I am looking forward to so much.
‘It is an exciting challenge and I am delighted to be here.
‘Martin [Odegaard] said the fans and people are so good and really welcoming and you will love your time here.
‘The club is in a good place, especially over the last few seasons and this season the Champions League, so it is an amazing club.’
