Lazio vs AS Roma Review
A remarkable goal in the second half by Matías Soulé helped AS Roma secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against their rivals Lazio, allowing the Giallorossi to maintain their impressive unbeaten streak in Serie A at 16 matches (11 wins, 5 draws). Entering the 162nd SA edition of the Derby della Capitale with only one victory in their last six competitive matches, Lazio recognized the need for a strong start. Marco Baroni’s team quickly asserted their dominance, with Romagnoli’s close-range header being expertly saved by Svilar. Grateful for the early escape, Roma gradually found their rhythm as the first half went on, but once again relied on Svilar, who denied a powerful angled shot from Gustav Isaksen.
As halftime approached, the hosts continued to search for a goal, with Isaksen appearing most likely to score, but his dangerous attempt was expertly saved by Svilar. The one-sided play continued into the early part of the second half, and Lazio finally capitalized on their pressure just two minutes after the restart when Luca Pellegrini delivered a well-placed free-kick that was expertly headed in by former Roma player Romagnoli. After winning five consecutive away matches in Serie A, the Giallorossi sought an immediate reply, but Christos Mandas in the Lazio goal was resolute, saving a low header from Gianluca Mancini.
Undeterred, Ranieri’s team equalized in spectacular fashion in the 69th minute when Matías Soulé scored a stunning 25-yard shot that hit the underside of the bar, marking his fourth goal of the season. This created an intriguing conclusion, where Svilar once again saved Roma by deflecting Pedro’s shot from the edge of the area. Both teams sought a winning goal as the match neared its end, but it ultimately ended in a draw, leaving Lazio three points behind the top four. Meanwhile, Roma’s consecutive draws in Serie A have slowed their momentum, although Ranieri’s team has not lost in the league since mid-December.
