Liverpool vs Everton Review
Liverpool moved closer to reclaiming the Premier League title with a 1-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, ending the Toffees’ nine-match unbeaten streak in the league. The Merseyside derby is known for its intense atmosphere, and the 246th match was no exception. Within the first 10 minutes, he fouled Alexis Mac Allister with a calf-high challenge, which surprisingly only resulted in a yellow card after a VAR review, as Tarkowski’s attempt to win the ball seemed to mitigate the severity of the foul.
After the VAR check, Tarkowski delivered a perfectly placed ball for Beto to score in front of the Kop. Luckily for Liverpool, the referee’s flag halted the Everton forward’s celebration, keeping the score level. Beto then had another great opportunity, this time onside, but after being set up by Abdoulaye Doucouré, he could only watch in frustration as his shot hit the post. Everton manager David Moyes had to regret those missed chances in the second half, especially since he had never won in his 19 previous managerial visits to Anfield.
His worst fears came true just 15 minutes after the break when Diogo Jota seized a loose ball, skillfully maneuvered into the box, and scored in front of the Kop, sending the crowd into a frenzy. From that point, it was always going to be difficult for Everton to find a way back into the match, although the return of Iliman Ndiaye from injury provided a much-needed boost, even if he couldn’t turn the game in their favor.
Maintaining a one-goal lead in the final moments was bound to make the Anfield crowd a bit anxious, but Luis Díaz aimed to ease their nerves by having his shot on goal blocked on the line by Tarkowski with 10 minutes remaining. In the end, Liverpool successfully held onto their lead, achieving their 26th consecutive unbeaten league match.
