Luis Suarez could be denied reunion with Messi at Inter Miami

Gremio has made the decision to remain fast and thwart Luis Suarez’s much awaited transfer to Inter Miami, preventing him from reuniting with Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Suarez, who has been a top target for Miami, stated his intention to sign with the team before the August 2 deadline. According to ESPN, Gremio is adamant on keeping the Uruguayan attacker until at least the end of the year.

Suarez allegedly agreed to buy out his contract with Gremio in order to expedite his transfer. But because his current contract with the Brazilian club is slated to expire in December 2024, the talks are difficult and heated.

This summer, Inter Miami made substantial steps in the transfer market to recruit Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. To further advance their goals in the MLS, the team also hired Gerardo “Tata” Martino, a former manager of Barcelona, as their new head coach. Suarez and Andres Iniesta, two more Barcelona legends, would have completed Miami’s collection of Camp Nou icons had they pursued them. Miami may have to postpone its pursuit of the Uruguayan striker due to Gremio’s opposition to Suarez’s transfer.

Miami bought a spot on the San Jose Earthquakes’ international roster so they could include Suarez on their team. Suarez’s transfer to Miami fell through, thus it’s now likely that Iniesta, a free agent after leaving Japanese club Vissel Kobe, may get the roster spot. According to reports, Iniesta may soon sign a two-year deal with DRV PNK Stadium.

The wait for Messi, Busquets, and Alba to play for Inter Miami is almost over. The trio will play their first MLS game on August 21 when Miami plays Charlotte. Suarez will continue to play for Gremio this week when they take on Flamengo.
