Manchester City transfer news update: City is reportedly looking to add Mateo Kovacic to their squad ahead of next season
Football Insider claims that Manchester City, is now focusing on acquiring Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic during the forthcoming summer transfer window. The move follows a significant development in their pursuit of Jude Bellingham, a midfielder for Borussia Dortmund, with rumours suggesting that the 19-year-old is close to signing a contract with Real Madrid despite the attention of Premier League defending Champions.
The 29-year-old Croatian international is reportedly a “big fan” of Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who is eager to lure him to the Etihad Stadium. After spending five years with the Blues, Kovacic has just one year left on his Stamford Bridge deal and may be available for transfer.
During his tenure in England, the midfielder has won the Europa League and the Champions League. This season, he has made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Despite Kovacic’s limited participation in the current Premier League season because of injuries and new arrivals, Chelsea is reportedly in negotiations with the midfielder about a new deal. After January 2024, the player will be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with other clubs. Thomas Tuchel, a former Chelsea manager, is apparently also urging Bayern Munich to sign Kovacic.
Pep Guardiola is keen on bringing in a new midfielder with Ilkay Gundogan most likely to leave the club. Although Manchester City has periphery players, like Kalvin Phillips, Guardiola nevertheless wants to bolster his midfield options and add more depth. Other players like Mason Mount have also been linked to the Etihad. We can only wait and see what transpires in the transfer window.
