Manchester City vs Bayer Leverkusen Review
Bayer Leverkusen delivered a flawless away performance to secure a 2-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. This marked only their second Champions League away victory against English teams (with one draw and eight losses previously). In a surprising move, Guardiola made significant changes for the European game, altering 10 players from the lineup that lost 2-1 to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Despite the many changes, City started positively, with Nathan Aké forcing a sharp save from Mark Flekken at the near post. However, Leverkusen quickly regained control after that early chance and shocked the home side by scoring the opening goal midway through the first half. The German team executed a smooth passing move from defense to attack, ending with Christian Kofane skillfully controlling a cross for Álex Grimaldo, who fired a low shot past James Trafford.

City found themselves trailing for the first time this season in the UCL and threatened to equalize late in the first half when Tijjani Reijnders had his right-footed shot saved by Flekken. Unhappy with the first half’s performance, Guardiola brought on Phil Foden, Jérémy Doku, and Nico O’Reilly at halftime to add energy to a lackluster display. However, the substitutes were still settling in when Patrik Schick increased Leverkusen’s lead within 10 minutes after the restart. The determined striker got ahead of Aké to direct a precise header past Trafford from Ibrahim Maza’s inswinging cross, scoring in consecutive European matches.

This prompted Guardiola to bring on his star forward, Erling Haaland, who almost made an immediate impact by breaking through on goal, but his shot was saved by the sprawling Flekken. The Dutch goalkeeper made another crucial save to deny Rayan Cherki’s late free-kick, securing Leverkusen’s second victory in the league phase. Kasper Hjulmand’s team climbed to 13th place and are now just two points behind sixth-placed City, who have lost their unbeaten streak in the competition.
