Manchester City vs Feyenoord Review
Manchester City’s difficult stretch continues as Pep Guardiola’s team squandered a 3-0 lead, allowing Feyenoord to secure a 3-3 draw, which extends the Cityzens’ winless streak to six matches. Erling Haaland nearly celebrated his fourth goal of the Champions League season just 10 minutes in, but Timon Wellenreuther made an incredible save to prevent the ball from going in off the post. Just two minutes later, Wellenreuther almost turned from hero to villain when he mistakenly passed the ball to Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese player then set up Jack Grealish, but Grealish’s volley was deflected off teammate Phil Foden, resulting in a goal kick.
Feyenoord slowly began to settle into the match, but Wellenreuther had to make another fantastic save in the 23rd minute, deflecting a powerful low shot from Foden around the post. The visitors forced Ederson into action for the first time just after the half-hour mark when Igor Paixão attempted to surprise his fellow countryman with a first-time shot following a pass from Inbeom Hwang. Just when it seemed that Brian Priske’s team would head into halftime on level terms, referee Radu Petrescu awarded a penalty in the 41st minute after Haaland was brought down by Quinten Timber. Haaland converted the penalty with a low shot to the left of the goalkeeper.
After the break, Pep Guardiola’s team continued their momentum and increased their lead just four minutes in when a cleared corner fell to İlkay Gündoğan, who struck a low volley that deflected off the unfortunate Dávid Hancko. The situation worsened for Hancko just two minutes later when he was outpaced by Nunes, who set up Haaland to score his second goal of the match and his 46th in the UEFA Champions League.
Defensive weaknesses continued to trouble the Cityzens as a miscommunication between Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Joško Gvardiol allowed Anis Hadj-Moussa to round Ederson and score from a tight angle with just under 15 minutes left in the match. The drama didn’t stop there, in the 81st minute, a cross from Paixão was deflected off the post by Jordan Lotomba and then tapped in by substitute Santiago Gimenez, creating a tense finish for the home supporters.
Remarkably, Feyenoord managed to equalize when Ederson was caught far from his goal, allowing Paixão to calmly assist Hancko, who headed the ball into the empty net. A deflected shot from Grealish hit the crossbar in stoppage time, but Feyenoord remains unbeaten in all 11 away matches across competitions this season. Meanwhile, City’s struggles continue as they have now gone six games without a win.
