Marco Reus Steps Down as Borussia Dortmund Captain

Borussia Dortmund’s long-standing forward, Marco Reus, has officially announced his decision to relinquish the captaincy of the club.

The 34-year-old German international took on the role of Dortmund captain at the beginning of the 2018-19 season, succeeding former defender Marcel Schmelzer.

After a commendable five-year stint as the team’s captain, Reus made the decision to inform manager Edin Terzic and sporting director Sebastian Kehl of his choice to relinquish the armband. In a statement, Reus expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I had a lot of time to think during my vacation and have decided to pass on the captain’s armband. I informed Terzic and Kehl about my decision yesterday.”

Reus, who has been a dedicated servant to Borussia Dortmund, joined the club in 2012 from Borussia Monchengladbach, having previously come through the ranks of the Dortmund academy. Despite facing numerous injury setbacks during his 11-year tenure, the seasoned player has managed an impressive 387 appearances, scoring 161 goals and providing 121 assists.

While his individual contributions to the team cannot be understated, Reus has been unable to secure the coveted Bundelisga title with Dortmund. Last season, they came agonizingly close to clinching the championship, only to falter on the final day, drawing 2-2 with Mainz and narrowly missing out on glory.

As Reus passes the torch to a new leader, Dortmund fans will undoubtedly reflect on his significant contributions to the club. Having won five trophies during his time with the German outfit, his impact on and off the field will forever be remembered. The search for a deserving successor now begins, with both Sebastian Kehl and Edin Terzic entrusted to find the ideal candidate to fill Reus’ captaincy shoes.
