Marseille vs OGC Nice Review
Marseille maintained their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season with a 2-0 victory over OGC Nice at the Orange Vélodrome. Marseille entered the match in great form, sitting in second place after three games and achieving their highest goal tally at this stage in 70 years. Roberto De Zerbi’s team showed no signs of slowing down, coming close to scoring just four minutes in when Neal Maupay’s cutback found Luis Henrique in a threatening position, but the Brazilian’s shot was easily saved by Marcin Bułka.
After a quick start from the home team, both sides found it difficult to create scoring chances. However, Marseille maintained control of the ball as they sought to break the deadlock. They thought they had scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Maupay found the net, but his debut goal against his former team was disallowed for offside. Undeterred, the forward scored just four minutes later, heading Henrique’s lofted pass into the bottom-right corner from close range.
After halftime, Les Phocéens continued to press forward and were rewarded eight minutes into the second half when they extended their lead. Henrique played a key role again, this time scoring himself after receiving a pass from Amine Harit at the edge of the area and firing it into the top-right corner to double the home team’s lead.
The home team appeared to be in control after scoring their second goal, but Nice was given a chance to come back with 15 minutes left when Marseille was reduced to 10 players. Derek Cornelius received a second yellow card for time-wasting during a free-kick. However, the visitors were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority, and Marseille held on to secure their first clean sheet of the season and maintain their unbeaten record. Meanwhile, Nice is in ninth place after a challenging start, having won only one of their first four matches.
