Former referee Mike Dean quits Premier League VAR role

The referees’ organization announced on Saturday that Mike Dean, a well-known referee, will resign from his position as a Premier League VAR official and leave the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

Dean, who has been a referee in the Premier League since 2000 and has officiated over 550 matches, transitioned to a full-time Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official in 2022.

He frequently caught people’s attention with his charming way of officiating, displaying a stylish approach to handing out cards and even allowing the ball to pass between his legs during matches.

Among the numerous memorable moments in his career, Dean will probably be most renowned for a video that went viral, showing him enthusiastically celebrating in the stands while watching Tranmere Rovers, the team he has been a fan of since he was a child.

“PGMOL would like to place on record its recognition of Mike’s achievements as well as his immense contribution to refereeing and the game as a whole,” PGMOL said in a statement.

“We thank him for his dedication to the organisation over a sustained period of time and wish him every success for the future.”
