Mohammed Salisu has completed his move from Southampton to Monaco, signing a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 side.
The transfer was finalized after the two clubs reached an agreement over the weekend.
The 24-year-old defender was not part of Southampton’s squad for their pre-season friendlies against AZ Alkmaar and Bournemouth, signaling his imminent departure from the club.
Fulham had shown interest in acquiring Salisu earlier in the transfer window, with a potential £15 million deal in the works. However, Fulham eventually shifted their focus to signing Calvin Bassey, allowing Monaco to secure the services of Salisu.
Salisu’s last appearance for Southampton was in March, and he was subsequently left out of the squad towards the end of the season due to concerns about his commitment and application during his recovery from injury. Despite this, he managed to make 22 Premier League appearances for the club during the 2022-23 season.
In the meantime, Monaco is bracing themselves for the departure of one of their own center-backs, Axel Disasi, who is set to join Chelsea. The deal with the Premier League side has been agreed upon, making Disasi the second defender in recent transfer windows to make the switch from Monaco to west London, following Benoit Badiashile’s move to Chelsea in January.
With Salisu’s arrival, Monaco aims to bolster their defensive options for the upcoming season, while also potentially benefitting from the financial gains from Disasi’s transfer to Chelsea.
